About Catherine Bell

Catherine Bell is a designer and maker of contemporary embroidery based in South Manchester.

She creates vibrant, whimsical embroideries with a quirky interpretation on nature which she incorporates into her work, with the aim of creating pieces that are unique, joyful and a feast for the eyes. She is self-taught and has been developing her style and techniques in machine and hand embroidery at her home studio in Manchester, where she now works full time.

Catherine’s work is produced on the sewing machine using free machine embroidery. She pours over fabrics making sure they are the right colour, texture and tone combinations to bring the embroidery to life. She predominantly contrasts these fabrics with black stitch by effectively ‘drawing’ with the sewing machine onto canvas. Subjects include poppies, long legged birds, and trees.  The stitched, layered, elegant fabric poppies come in limitless colours, long legged birds are full of character and the mixed media trees (in paint and stitch) which represent each season, are delicate and stylish.

Catherine says of her work, “I love bold, vibrant material and am fascinated by how different materials work when laid together, how fraying an edge can give a new dimension and how imprecise embroidery brings character to a creation.”
